I never really thought much about this dress until I was in Austin browsing The Domain one afternoon and saw this girl wearing it in the blue colorway and looking amaaaazing in it.  As I kept moving store to store, I kept running into her again and again, and more often than not we would awkwardly bump into each other because we seemed to be always interested in the same items.  Clearly I had a style and taste twin, and I took this as a sign I should make a note to try on the dress she was wearing the next time I hit an Anthro.  The blue colorway didn’t end up working for me, but I did love this brown zig zag version, and I ended up happily picking it up during last week’s percentage off sale items promotion for a whopping 80% off the original price.  I love this dress’s easy, comfy jersey material, the flattering cut, the twirly skirt, the modest length, and its excitingly dizzying print that teases the eye and and emphasizes all the curves of my body in just the right way.  So, many thanks to my anonymous style twin for opening my eyes to this wonderful piece!

I always welcome the onset of autumn; it’s a chance to abandon those flimsy, boring sundresses and start to dig into substantial fabrics, richer colors and a myriad of layering opportunities.  It’s still comparatively warm out, so no real layering for me, but I did break out a vintagey/schoolgirl full pleated a-line skirt and a more fall-appropriate color palette of tan, black and some deep saturated oranges, blues, greens and purples.  Also broken out this day: my favorite ultimate lazy-person hairstyle as I had about six minutes to get ready in the morning:

When I’m too lazy even to make two braids, a single, messy, 30-second plait quickly pinned in a loop behind my head will do — for some reason, people always think this takes real time and effort and I get more compliments on it than any other hair style.   What they don’t know can’t hurt them I guess :)

Do you have those pieces in your closet, clothes that are gorgeous and that you feel just beautiful in, but that you have serious problems making versatile and pairing with anything else?  This dress is one of those for me.  Love its flowy, drapey, Grecian cut, the beautiful neckline, and the gorgeous colors, but all of those things make it so difficult to layer with, especially in the colder months.  Here are some ways I’ve worn it in the past, and this is how I gave it a try this day, but felt like I could have done better (and/or maybe broken out of the blue/gray color palette a little).  Any of you readers have any advice for me?

So many truly lovely dresses out this month.  The first and foremost of which is Yoana Baraschi’s stunning Veiled Alder Dress, with beautiful whorls and leaves embroidered upon sheer mesh.  It comes in a darker grey color way as well, but my heart is smitten with the ivory version, which has a gorgeous ice-princess-like effect.  Next is the Glinting Persica Sweater Dress, which has been around for a little while, but never caught my eye until I saw it in person.  The nude, gold and cream floral pattern is certainly pretty, but its the wonderful, flattering fit on this sweater dress that truly makes it a winner.  Next is the Unconditional Osier Dress, which is a longer, dress version of my beloved Brushed Lace Pullover, in a pretty blue color.  Then we have the Dulcie Dress; though I have concerns about it being too sheer, it looks warm, intricate and romantic, especially with its tulle skirt, and I am dying to try it on and see how it fares in person.  Last is the Many Folds Dress.  It’s hard to get a sense of the fit of this online, but I must say I’m totally intrigued by the adorable origami diagram pattern.

I love a good animal-print, and Anthropologie has delivered in spades this month.  I remember staring and marveling at British designer Charlotte Taylor’s lovely collection of brightly hued, animal-printed fabrics last Spring, but wondering if I had any chance of snagging any of them overseas.  Thankfully Anthropologie stocked one or two of her scarves earlier this year, and this fall they’ve decided to carry a variety of her prints — adorable penguins, camels, flamingos, snails, and ants — in a series of beautifully-cut silk blouses, dresses, and skirts.  Anthropologie has even proffered up a similar print from one of their house-brands in the Tarpan Buttondown, covered with skittering little red mice.

I’ve been patiently waiting for the Enduring Tweed Overcoat to show up every since I saw Roxy wearing it at the blogger Color + Print event that Anthropologie hosted earlier this fall.  When it suddenly appeared on the site for an apparently 60% off (though in reality, 30%, someone had made a typo on the retail price…) my eyes nearly popped out of my head and I hit order so fast my head nearly spun.  Still impatiently waiting for it to arrive (curses to Anthropologie’s habit of shipping to me via glacially slow UPS), but hoping it is just as fabulous in person as it looked on Roxy.  Next is a series of perfectly fall-appropriate pullovers and skirts.  Loving the multi-colored stripes and decorative diagonal buttons on the Gradated Stripes Pullover, and think it could coordinate wonderfully with the swingy, deep-pocketed Effortless Corduroy Skirt.  Also a huge fan of the super soft, pumpkin-hued, diamond-patterned Thousand Carat Sweater, and the pine-green, graphic-lined Tsuga Skirt.   Last is the Lozenge Pullover (so similar to the Thousand Carat, but in a pretty plum shade) and the delightful tartan Glasbury Pencil Skirt..

Just one more glimpse from my vacation — this time an outfit post featuring my favorite sundress, Anthropologie’s Sur Mer Chemise.  That’s right, I picked this one up from the sleepwear section, but I think it was clearly meant to be a dress or at least a coverup (and was certainly priced as such!), and at any rate too pretty to just wear inside.  This is pretty much the only full-priced item I’ve bought from Anthropologie at full price this year without any sort of discount or gift card, and it annoying went on sale about three weeks after I bought it — just outside that pesky price adjustment window! — but I don’t regret it one bit.  The print of the quaint beachside town reminds me of whimsical Anthro pieces of yore, and the light cotton-material and twirly cut have made it the perfect hot-weather companion, keeping me company in the hot deserts of Coachella this spring, through many a happy carefree day this summer, and splashing about in the waves and enjoying beachside sunsets this past weekend in Mexico.  With the advent of rain an autumn chill this last week, I’ve set it aside to pack into storage soon, but I’m paying it one last tribute here before I can pull it out again next spring!

My apologies for my brief absence from posting; I’ve been traveling for the last two weeks and have not had as much time (read: any) to write as I would like.  First I visited my best friend in Austin for a few days, then I hopped back to the Bay Area, sandwiched in my work week in two days, and then left for a vacation with my whole extended family in Mexico.  I didn’t have any big expectations for my family trip, but I was totally blown away by the the natural beauty down in Cabo San Lucas, and I think it may have redefined my idea of paradise.  It now includes:

Sun-filled, wide and inviting porticos, rising green palms, and endless blue waters…

(Oh, and an infinity pool.  Definitely an infinity pool.)

.

Sunny, perfect days to wander about with my cousins and play on the shore.  To be able to leap from the scorching expanse of sand to the cooling waters, to wade in and clamber up upon the rocks and back, to to dig one’s feet into the surf and feel the waves rush past.

.

It includes a balcony to eat breakfast from and  watch the sun rise every morning:

.

…and a perch on the beach where one can watch the sun set.  And before that, from which to see my nephew frolic about, and where you can settle in and  start and finish a great book:

.

In paradise, there’s a continuously undulating ocean of sapphire blues and crystalline greens, with waters so clear you can see fish swarm about you from the surface:

And (maybe my very favorite part of my trip) an opportunity to set rescued baby sea turtles free, to watch them slowly crawl into the waves and begin their lives:

I landed at the San Francisco airport earlier this week to find it raining on me.  I was a bit surprised at the sudden change of weather, even compared to before when I left, but I was grateful that if I had to say goodbye to summer, that I could experience the end of it in a truly grand last hurrah among the perfect, paradisical beaches of Cabo.

Splendid Stripe Shirt, Club Monaco Bennet Skirt, J.Crew Belt, Anthropologie Bowed Lacerata Mary-Janes

I talked last week about my excitement at the return of the midi-skirt; besides the cobalt Zara number I wore in my last outfit, this daintily polka-dotted and pleated skirt is the other one I’ve obtained for fall.  I remember trying it on excitedly sometime in late July and wanting to bring it home with me, but the $150 price tag gave me pause.  So imagine my delight when I visited my local Club Monaco store to check on this skirt (half-expecting it to be the same price) and found it had somehow dropped all the way to $40.  I grabbed it and headed to the checkout so fast I practically left skid marks in my wake.  Beige-y, nude colors aren’t really my forte, but I think being friends with Tien for so long has influenced me enough that I finally see their beauty and am slowly beginning to add them to my wardrobe.  Not sure how well they’ll work with other traditional fall colors (maroon, navy, eggplant, mustard, and the like) besides the cognac I’m wearing here, but I’ll see if I extend its wearability still into the autumn somehow.
