Anthropologie The Gathering Tank, Skirt, and Necklace, Forever 21 Belt, All Black Mary Janes

I always welcome the onset of autumn; it’s a chance to abandon those flimsy, boring sundresses and start to dig into substantial fabrics, richer colors and a myriad of layering opportunities.  It’s still comparatively warm out, so no real layering for me, but I did break out a vintagey/schoolgirl full pleated a-line skirt and a more fall-appropriate color palette of tan, black and some deep saturated oranges, blues, greens and purples.  Also broken out this day: my favorite ultimate lazy-person hairstyle as I had about six minutes to get ready in the morning:

.

.

When I’m too lazy even to make two braids, a single, messy, 30-second plait quickly pinned in a loop behind my head will do — for some reason, people always think this takes real time and effort and I get more compliments on it than any other hair style.   What they don’t know can’t hurt them I guess :)

Do you have those pieces in your closet, clothes that are gorgeous and that you feel just beautiful in, but that you have serious problems making versatile and pairing with anything else?  This dress is one of those for me.  Love its flowy, drapey, Grecian cut, the beautiful neckline, and the gorgeous colors, but all of those things make it so difficult to layer with, especially in the colder months.  Here are some ways I’ve worn it in the past, and this is how I gave it a try this day, but felt like I could have done better (and/or maybe broken out of the blue/gray color palette a little).  Any of you readers have any advice for me?

Anthropologie October Wishlist
October 10, 2011, 7:37 am

My Anthropologie-lust has been rather tempered for the last couple of months, but I admit some of the October new arrivals have me totally excited again.  So many lovely beautiful patterns, textures, and rich, saturated colors have me looking forward to dressing for fall and winter!  Here are some of my favorite pieces:

.

Veiled Alder Dress (#22887426, $298), Glinting Persica Sweater Dress (#22853139, $188), Unconditional Osier Dress (#22804454, $168), Dulcie Dress (#22932032, $158), Many Folds Dress (#23140262, $168)

So many truly lovely dresses out this month.  The first and foremost of which is Yoana Baraschi’s stunning Veiled Alder Dress, with beautiful whorls and leaves embroidered upon sheer mesh.  It comes in a darker grey color way as well, but my heart is smitten with the ivory version, which has a gorgeous ice-princess-like effect.  Next is the Glinting Persica Sweater Dress, which has been around for a little while, but never caught my eye until I saw it in person.  The nude, gold and cream floral pattern is certainly pretty, but its the wonderful, flattering fit on this sweater dress that truly makes it a winner.  Next is the Unconditional Osier Dress, which is a longer, dress version of my beloved Brushed Lace Pullover, in a pretty blue color.  Then we have the Dulcie Dress; though I have concerns about it being too sheer, it looks warm, intricate and romantic, especially with its tulle skirt, and I am dying to try it on and see how it fares in person.  Last is the Many Folds Dress.  It’s hard to get a sense of the fit of this online, but I must say I’m totally intrigued by the adorable origami diagram pattern.

.

.

Adelie Blouse (#23382815, $158), Dromedary Dress (#23301427, $228), Stilt Striders Skirt (#23302169, $158) Tarpan Buttondown (#23519002, $88), In Clouds Blouse (#23297815, $148)

I love a good animal-print, and Anthropologie has delivered in spades this month.  I remember staring and marveling at British designer Charlotte Taylor’s lovely collection of brightly hued, animal-printed fabrics last Spring, but wondering if I had any chance of snagging any of them overseas.  Thankfully Anthropologie stocked one or two of her scarves earlier this year, and this fall they’ve decided to carry a variety of her prints — adorable penguins, camels, flamingos, snails, and ants — in a series of beautifully-cut silk blouses, dresses, and skirts.  Anthropologie has even proffered up a similar print from one of their house-brands in the Tarpan Buttondown, covered with skittering little red mice.

.

.

Enduring Tweed Overcoat (#22962062, $298), Gradated Stripes Pullover (#23089709, $88), Effortless Corduroy Skirt (#22859730, $88), Thousand Carat Pullover (#21292586, $98), Tsuga Skirt (#23461544, $148), Lozenge Pullover (#23104409, $78), Glasbury Pencil Skirt (#23074586, $148)

I’ve been patiently waiting for the Enduring Tweed Overcoat to show up every since I saw Roxy wearing it at the blogger Color + Print event that Anthropologie hosted earlier this fall.  When it suddenly appeared on the site for an apparently 60% off (though in reality, 30%, someone had made a typo on the retail price…) my eyes nearly popped out of my head and I hit order so fast my head nearly spun.  Still impatiently waiting for it to arrive (curses to Anthropologie’s habit of shipping to me via glacially slow UPS), but hoping it is just as fabulous in person as it looked on Roxy.  Next is a series of perfectly fall-appropriate pullovers and skirts.  Loving the multi-colored stripes and decorative diagonal buttons on the Gradated Stripes Pullover, and think it could coordinate wonderfully with the swingy, deep-pocketed Effortless Corduroy Skirt.  Also a huge fan of the super soft, pumpkin-hued, diamond-patterned Thousand Carat Sweater, and the pine-green, graphic-lined Tsuga Skirt.   Last is the Lozenge Pullover (so similar to the Thousand Carat, but in a pretty plum shade) and the delightful tartan Glasbury Pencil Skirt..

What about you readers?  Any favorites of your own from this month’s arrivals?

Fall TV season kicked off this week, which means the return of lots of Anthropologie on television!  Only a few sightings so far (admittedly, I haven’t watched half of my Thursday night shows yet), so I mixed some older appearances and commercials in this post too.  Hope you enjoy!

.

Glee – “The Purple Piano Project” (Episode 3×1) – Emma in the Lundin Links Sweater

.

Community – “Biology 101″ (Episode 3×1) – Night Petals Tank
(Also worn here in “Asian Population Studies”)

..

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably seen the non-stop commercials all summer for Zoey Deschanel’s new show, New Girl, and the Nostalgic Asterisks Dress therein.  Another set of promotional stills has her wearing the Lido Light Skirt below as well.  I caught the show earlier this week, and while I was not super impressed with the show in general, I was happy to see that the Anthropologie dress made the actual show as well, and was even featured in the credits sequence:

New Girl – “Pilot” (Episode 1×1) – Jess in the Nostalgic Asterisks Dress

.

Liz also wrote in to tell me about all the Anthropologie Ana Gasteyer was wearing on her guest stint on the last two episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm this season:

Curb Your Enthusiasm – “Mister Softee” (Episode 8×9) – Jennifer in the Doubly Dapper Dress

.

Curb Your Enthusiasm - “Mister Softee” (Episode 8×9) – Jennifer in the Oak Apple Dress

.

Curb Your Enthusiasm - “Larry vs. Michael J. Fox” (Episode 8×10) – Jennifer in the Forgotten Pond Tank

.

Curb Your Enthusiasm - “Larry vs. Michael J. Fox” (Episode 8×10) – Jennifer in the Compeer Dress

.

Val was kind enough to comment and let me know about Kelly Ripa wearing Anthro yesterday:

Live with Regis and Kelly – 9.22.11 Episode – Kelly Ripa in the Four Corners Dress

.

Project Runway – “Off The Track” (Episode 9×5) – Becky in the Polyna Corset Top
(Why is wearing Anthro always a harbinger of being cut within an episode or two this season? :/)

.

Drop Dead Diva – “False Alarm” (Episode 3×2) – Teri in the Precious Particulars Blouse

.

Annie wrote me about all the sightings Felicia Day’s character has been wearing on this season of Eureka:

Eureka – “Reprise” (Episode 4×12) – Holly in the Breezy Polkas Cardigan

.

Eureka – “Up in The Air” (Episode 4×14) – Holly in the Trickle Down Top and Simian Tableau Skirt

And now for some Anthro sightings in commercials:

(Thanks to Jess for commenting about this one!)

.

Well, that’s plenty for this roundup I think — I’ll return next week with a fresh crop of appearances.  If you see anything I’ve missed by the way, please feel free to comment or email and I’m happy to include your sighting and give you credit! Big thanks to all the ladies who contributed this time around.  Have a great weekend everyone!

Anthropologie September Wishlist
September 22, 2011, 10:19 am

September didn’t see me add too much to my pool of Anthropologie wants, and so I’ve kind of procrastinated posting a roundup of monthly favorites at all.  But better late than never!  Here are some of the things that have made it on my wishlist in the last month:

.

Painted Plaid Dress (#22639090) – $148, Melba Dress (#22814362) – $398

Loving the deep, rich hues of green in the first dress, as well as its fitted, girly silhouette and voluminous crinoline under layer.  It could easily serve on its own as a winter party dress, and would also layer beautifully with gray, maroon, brown and black tights, shoes, coats, and sweaters for day wear in the colder months.  The second dress is a Leifsdottir number that is on the other end of the spectrum color-wise — a pale peach silk frock with lace panels at the shoulders and skirt that is totally floaty and feminine.  Perhaps a bit unseasonal, but hey, I’m from Northern California, a place where seasons don’t really exist anyway :)

.

Zenobia Tee (#21214093) – $68, Tokonoma Tee (#21240684) – $98

The Zenobia Tee is a great basic made truly special by the beautiful sheer, ruched sleeves trimmed with lace.  This deep wine colorway is perfect to pair with skirts and jeans this fall, though to be honest I’m also hankering after it in navy as well.  Be warned it is a little clingy, especially around the mid-section, so if you’re interested, you may want to consider sizing up.  The Tokonoma Tee has a beautiful, brilliantly colored pattern that I love, and even better, it’s 100% silk, so it feels and falls like a dream.

.

Renewed Folds Pullover (#21206164)- $68, Settee Roses Skirt (#21207626) – $49.95 (was $88)

.

The Renewed Folds Pullover is a little out of my comfort zone both style and color-wise, but I tried it on on a whim in the store the other week and found it so flattering and so comfortable and easy to wear.  The Setttee Roses Skirt is another thing I wouldn’t have expected to love but I still somehow do.  Two of my commenters recommended it to me over the summer, but when I looked at it, I thought, “Oh it’s kind of pretty but it’s not something I need, I already have a ton of skirts.”  However, I picked it up on the way to the dressing room on one of my store trips, and I was shocked at how wonderful it was in person.  The material has a lovely weight and drape to it, the colors are rich and perfect for fall, the cut is very flattering, and the skirt even has my favorite feature of all, pockets.  When it went on sale a week later, I didn’t hesitate one minute before I snatched it up — I know I’m going to wear this a ton in the next few months.

.

Savusavu Pullover (#22628960) – $69.95 ($168), Quacking Up Loungers (#23127053) – $48

The Savusavu Pullover is another thing on my wishlist that’s already gone on sale, despite being a relatively recent arrival.  I suspect the mohair factor, its sheerness, and the relatively high initial price point were responsible for the quick drop of almost a $100.  (The same thing also happened to its sister sweater, the Bailong Pullover.)  I have full confidence that the mohair on this one (which I’m lucky enough to not find all that itchy) will make this sweater drop even further in price in the next few weeks, so I’m continuing to hold out for a while, but think this will make a nice weekend loungewear piece when I do finally bring it home with me.  And speaking of loungewear pieces, how amazing are these pajamas?  They have cute little orange ducks rambling all over them.  So adorable.

.

Mushroom Picking Chemise (#22139570) – $58, Gem-Dot Robe (#23161045) – $98

Some more loungewear wants: this sweetly cut and patterned silky mushroom-print nightgown (love the little corner pocket!) and this incredibly comfy-looking polka-dotted robe.

.

Bowed Lacerata Mary-Janes (#21036280) – $168, Brooch-Topped Skimmers (#22559843) – $98

If you read any other Anthro blogs you must have already heard the buzz about these cognac bow-topped mary janes.  I was curious but not completely sold on them (something about the strap and the side silhouette bothered me), but I had my online birthday discount to spend and there was free shipping, so I ordered them on a whim just to see what they were about.  And oh, I actually do love them, silhouette and strap and all.  The color makes them work so well with a lot of my dresses and skirts, the bows are of course adorable, and they are incredibly, incredibly comfortable.  I decided to keep them and I’ve worn them almost ever other day since.  (Look for them in an upcoming OOTD soon!)  My other shoe wish: these plummy, bauble-adorned ballet flats.  The color will work really well for fall, and the rhinestones will add a subtle hint of glam to any outfit.

.

And now for the were-on-my-wishlist-until-I-saw-them-in-person portion of our show:

.

Pointelle Variations Sweaterdress (#23103690) – $178, Mirrored Deer Tee (#22627558) – $88

Every year, Anthropologie releases an incredibly overpriced sweater dress, and every year I dutifully fall for it.  Last fall it was the Crocheted Clouds; the year before that was the Lolland Sweater Dress.  I know these dresses should cost nowhere near $200 to buy, and yet I hanker after them.  This year the cycle finally breaks with the Pointelle Variations Sweaterdress however.  I love lacy, crocheted dresses, but this one is too short and way too clingy for my tastes (though Anthropologie even tried to throw me a bone and reduced their going price by $10).  I felt a little scandalized by it in the dressing room.  Another disappointing item in person?  The Mirrored Deer Tee.  I love a good critter-print, and I was all set to love this deer-printed blouse, but in real life it is kind of appallingly bad.  The oversize-fit I can live with (though I seriously wonder how pinned up that model must have been in the catalog shot), but the quality on this one is just not there.  The front is super-sheer, and the edges are raw and have unraveling threads hanging off it all over.  It looked like it was literally falling apart on my body.  Hrmph.  No thank you.

Anyway, that’s my short-and-sweet wishlist for September!  As I mentioned, I found this month kind of ho-hum in general (nothing that really makes my heart sing, and my wishlists usually aren’t almost 50% accessories), but I am super excited for what’s coming up later this fall and winter.  Some of the stuff I saw in the EU fall catalog when it was briefly online looked amazing (there’s this one beautiful Yoanna Baraschi dress in particular that looked like a longer, ivory version of this blouse), and I am super excited for the coat that Roxy wore at the blogger event to finally be released (already up on the EU site as the Heritage Coat).  So I’m actually grateful for this respite to save my pennies up for bigger and better things!

OOTD: Twirl, Twirl
September 21, 2011, 9:03 am

Anthropologie Instant Classic Tee, Zara Pleated Midi Skirt, Dolce Vita Spindle Heels

.

It’s so thrilling to me that midi skirts have become a la mode this season.  I was sick to death of miniskirts, and while maxi-lengths gave me the additional coverage I desired, it was a step too far (and annoyingly I could never quite figure out a proper pair of shoes to wear with them).  But this mid-length style strikes just the right balance of modesty and wearability, and has an added connotation of ’40s style elegance, femininity, and class besides.  Best of all, each one I’ve put on has this undeniable swishiness and twirl factor that just makes me want to throw out my arms and spin around in happy circles.  And when a piece of clothing has the power to make me want to move and feel as carefree as delighted child, I know it’s really special!

What about you readers — have any of you adopted this trend into your wardrobe for fall yet?  Any specific skirts you have your eye on?

Celebrities in Anthropologie: Dianna Agron – Part 2

I’ve been posting lately about all the Anthropologie that has been spotted on Glee these last few seasons, and you may have noticed that one of the major adopters of Anthro on the show is former cheerleader Quinn Fabray.  The cool thing about that is that not only does Quinn the character wear Anthropologie a lot, the actress who plays her, Dianna Agron, wears Anthropologie plenty in real life too.  I wrote this post last year detailing the many times Dianna had been spotted in Anthropologie, and while she sadly has stopped wearing as much Anthro on the actual red carpet, she still can be spotted sporting the brand in many real life candids.   Check out the new sightings I managed to find below!

While I admit my personal style is skews a little more towards the “Quinn” side of the spectrum, it’s still exciting for me to discover Dianna wearing all these pieces.  It’s so refreshing to see a celebrity who doesn’t spend massive amounts of money on their everyday wear and even likes the same stores and items that I do — her wardrobe makes her seem so easy going, down-to-earth, and relatable.  (Also, just incidentally, her traveling style is incredible!)  Dianna’s fashion choices are one of the first things that made me really notice her and have kept her as one of my favorite up-and-coming young actresses.

It’s Tuesday morning, which means it’s Anthropologie sale time!  I have been verrrry good about Anthro shopping these last few months, thanks partially to my own willpower, and thanks partially to Anthropologie itself only slowly meteing out markdowns on wishlist items (and most sale days in the past month not at all).  However, this sale morning is kind of killing me.  No fewer than sixteen items I’ve had my eye on got marked down!  Sixteen, people!  And I don’t want to talk about all the second cuts.  Blah.  On one hand: exciting!  On the other hand: budget shriveling up and hiding in a corner!  Harumph.  I think I might limit myself to this dress, this skirt, and this belt, if I’m good (“good”).  I can see all of them being versatile little wardrobe workhorses this upcoming season and I think I might regret passing them by if they sell out this week. We shall see.

I do have some advice for you readers — the dress I’m wearing here, the Tupelo, also just went on sale today, and it is fabbbbbulous.  A nice swishy silk, beautiful colors, an exciting little cutout at the back, and the dress even has pockets.  Pockets!  I actually bought it with my birthday discount because I was so sure it wouldn’t go on sale for ages with how popular it seemed to be, and I guess that just shows me, since it actually did a month later, but oh well.  I don’t regret it.  And if I don’t regret buying this dress at full price, obviously you should consider it at almost 50% off :)

Are you tempted by anything at the Anthro sale today?  How are your fall budgets doing in general?
