Anthropologie Speckled Ink Dress, J.Crew Cashmere Cardigan, Anthropologie Gather Together Clutch, J.Crew Watson Wedges

.

Do you have those pieces in your closet, clothes that are gorgeous and that you feel just beautiful in, but that you have serious problems making versatile and pairing with anything else?  This dress is one of those for me.  Love its flowy, drapey, Grecian cut, the beautiful neckline, and the gorgeous colors, but all of those things make it so difficult to layer with, especially in the colder months.  Here are some ways I’ve worn it in the past, and this is how I gave it a try this day, but felt like I could have done better (and/or maybe broken out of the blue/gray color palette a little).  Any of you readers have any advice for me?

I have the same problem with this dress! I have the purple print, which I think has a slightly different vibe, but one thing that I really like doing with it is wearing a (non-cardigan) sweater or shirt over top of it and then adding a belt. Instant skirt! I usually pair it with a sort of chunky black cowl neck sweater and a wide belt, but ymmv. Yes, it covers up the awesome neckline, but the awesome neckline is kind of the issue, so I’m fine with hiding it every once in a while so I can get some more use out of the dress.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Megan! I think I did actually think of wearing a blue pullover it once a while ago but forgot when it actually came time to dress myself! My problem is that the hem of the dress is uneven and can be quite scandalous if it rides up at all, so I’m a little trepidatious of wearing it as a skirt, but if I’m wearing it in the colder months, I’ll use tights anyway, so I guess its not a problem. It sounds like it would be lovely with a black cowl-neck sweater (to bring out a little bit of the draping in the hidden-neckline), I’ll definitely have to try that! =)

Anjali, you did a great job layering! I am in love with your necklace and in desperate need of a longer length necklace. Is it a recent purchase? Thanks!

Hi Lorraine! The necklace is actually pretty old — its from when Heidi Klum designed her clover collection for QVC (…of all places). I’m sure you can find it on eBay or something though with a little patience :)

well, the nice thing about it is that the dress speaks for itself, since the pattern and draping are so lovely. I wonder if a long draping cardigan would be neat, to play with the proportions?

I like the simple way the crossover strap on your shoes echo the dress!

Yeah, I love this dress but it’s such a bugger to style! I was thinking of trying to wear a skirt over the bottom and wear it as a top… could work!

I have the Speckled Ink Dress too, and I typically pair it with a navy cardigan like you. I’ve also worn it with the roaming frills cardigan in ivory, which is more of a beige. It’s not especially creative, but I liked the combination.

I don’t wear the dress often. I think I would wear it more if the hem was longer, like the picture in the catalog.

You do look beautiful in that dress!!!

I can see a yellow or red pairing working with this dress. What do you think?

the dress looks great on you.

i’m a fan of rust & navy together. maybe as a ballet type wrap sweater so you can still see the neckline?

btw, the crazy sf fall weather is making it tough to get dressed in the morning. it’s cold and rainy one day and sunny the next! i can never put any of my clothes away. grr.

I been tempted to own this dress for ever now!
I like how you styled it today. Besides a classic dress/cardigan combo, what about one of those sheer tops/sweaters that anthro has been all about lately? Like the Camellia blouse or the Thousand Carat pullover?
