Anthropologie Speckled Ink Dress, J.Crew Featherweight Cashmere Cardigan in Slate, Cole Haan Air Talia Mid Pump in Ironstone Patent, Rachel Leigh ‘Over It’ Necklace
This dress is a bit of a challenge to wear sometimes, because while playing up its Greek goddess attributes works fine in the summertime, it doesn’t fly as well in the colder months. But the Speckled Ink Dress came out in last year’s January catalog, so I stubbornly pulled it off the rack the other morning and told myself that there had to be a way to properly winterize it. In today’s outfit, I added navy tights and a gray cardigan and shoes — blue and gray is one of my standby favorite color combinations and rarely lets me down. I belted the cardigan low (using some terrible belt I think I stole from my Mullany Dress) instead of buttoning it up to allow one to still see the dress’ gorgeous neckline. I added a gray overcoat before going out, and voila, a winterized (well, Northern California winterized) Speckled Ink.
You guys may recall how I’ve been yammering non-stop about how I finally ended my search for my perfect pair of yellow heels. Another set of shoes I’ve finally been able to cross off my wardrobe needs list is a pair of medium-gray patent pumps. I’ve been looking for about six or seven months, but they’ve been tricky to track down, perhaps because of long list of requirements. They can’t be too high, they need to be just the right shade of gray, I don’t like platforms, they need to be patent and not suede, the toebox needs to be rounded, they have to be well-made, embellishment is not encouraged, and most dauntingly, they need to come in a size 11. (You can imagine that last one alone narrowed down the field of candidates considerably.) Finally I discovered the Cole Haan Air Talias. They not only met all my requirements, but because they were part of Cole Haan’s Nike Air series, they were extra comfortable. They even have treads on the bottom, which, while kind of not aesthetically pleasing, are not visible from the top and make sure I’ll never slip. (And more importantly, they kind of make me feel like I’m walking on clouds.) Plus, because I patiently waited and stalked these for a few weeks, I was even able to score them for almost 50% off! Yay for finding much sought after items at great prices!

Comment by Bronzi January 9, 2011 @ 11:50 amNicely done! I especially like the texture contrast of the patent pumps…
Comment by thatdamngreendress January 9, 2011 @ 12:36 pmI just got this dress last week actually (thank-you EA board!!) so I’ve been wondering how to wear it winterally…not that I have any slate cardigans in my arsenal, but there is a nice similarly patterned J Crew cardi I was thinking might work…
i love this ootd, and those pumps are pretty amazing as well! way to go on finding exactly that you wanted, and for the 50% off!
Comment by all things aimee January 9, 2011 @ 12:37 pmSuper stunning! Love how you picked up on those deep gray tones.
Comment by Mandy January 9, 2011 @ 1:24 pmGorgeous, GORGEOUS pairing of the cardigan and belt with the dress! I’m also super impressed with your method of finding wardrobe necessities. I am definitely inspired to do the same. It not only results in the perfect item, but at a discount too! Please let me know if the pumps stay comfortable after a couple hours, I’m always looking for a pair of comfy (and adorable) heels!
Comment by Cindy January 9, 2011 @ 2:00 pmI wore them all day this day and they were very comfortable throughout! I will say towards the end of the day my left (wider) foot was feeling like the toe box was a mite narrow, but I have pretty wide feet and this is a problem that can be fixed just using a shoe stretcher. I have two other pairs of Cole Haan x Nike Air Shoes (four or five years old at this point, still going strong) and find them incredibly comfortable as well. I would definitely give them a try!
Comment by goldenmeans January 10, 2011 @ 8:54 amI love your color palette! You did a great job winterizing that dress- I immediately noticed the interesting neckline and your heels look awesome. I’ve been dying to find a pair of Cole Haan Air shoes (on sale, of course)!
Comment by a stylized hysteria January 9, 2011 @ 2:16 pmLove the outfit and especially the shoes! I never thought this dress could work for winter but you’ve changed my mind. Gorgeous!

Comment by A Loopy Life January 9, 2011 @ 3:20 pmBeautiful winter palette! I really wish I’d bought this dress, I think I’m going to start actively hunting for it. :) Your OOTD is right up my alley!
Comment by roxy January 9, 2011 @ 3:24 pmI really like the straight lines of the cardi against the sweeping lines of the dress. Very flattering on you! It instantly draws attention to the great look of the dress. Very pretty!
Comment by Alicia January 9, 2011 @ 3:29 pmThis is one of my favorite outfits on you. The colors and silhouette look fantastic on you! Great job!
Comment by Bonnie January 9, 2011 @ 5:15 pmLove the outfit and I really love the shoes! I never thought to wear this dress in the winter, you did a great job. My sister found the Dreamy Drape Dress for me in the grey last week, but I haven’t gotten from her yet. I hope to replicate this look soon.
Comment by Natasha January 9, 2011 @ 5:35 pmI love how you paired the dress with the slate colored cardi. It looks very pretty! Also shoes are great!
Comment by ali January 9, 2011 @ 5:43 pmWow, stunning outfit Anjali. I’m always impressed by what you come up with. The dress looks even better winterized i think!
Comment by vintageglammz January 9, 2011 @ 6:34 pmThose patent grey pumps look like they will get quite a wearing!
I passed on this dress cause I looked crazy in it– but you look great. I love how you winterized the look.
Comment by thirteenlbs January 9, 2011 @ 6:41 pmThis dress is hard enough to wear/style on its own in the summer, so I’m really impressed that you were able to winterize it. I actually think I like the dress winterized better than I do on its own…I love it!
Comment by Sara-Youmeandanthropologie January 9, 2011 @ 6:55 pmYou DID find a great pair of gray pumps. They look so classic, timeless, and chic. And I too am a huge fan of Cole Haan shoes. That Nike Air technology is worth a few extra bucks.
And your winterized version of the Dreamy Drape looks divine. I like that the cardigan is open enough that you can still see some of its Grecian goddess goodness.
Comment by Jamie January 10, 2011 @ 4:14 amThat dress is perfection winterized! The neckline under the cardigan is so interesting – almost more so than the dress on its own when it’s obvious that it’s Grecian-inspired.
High five on the shoes!
Comment by Jessica January 10, 2011 @ 4:52 amthat dress is SO beautiful! i absolutely love the draping. it is one of those things i would think couldn’t be worn with a sweater over it, but you totally made it work. ~joelle
Comment by joelle van dyne January 10, 2011 @ 8:18 amWhy thank you ladies! I appreciate all your kind words :) And some of you have convinced me too — I kind of like this winterized version more than just the plain ‘ol summertime version of this dress too now. Layers give it a bit of excitement!
Comment by goldenmeans January 10, 2011 @ 8:51 amI think I have the same heels – are they IronSTONE, rather than IronSIDE patent?
Love your styling here – another home run!
Comment by Denise January 10, 2011 @ 8:30 pmYup, they are indeed Ironstone, not Ironside! I had the War of 1812 or something on the brain or something when typing clearly! ;) I will correct it just now!
Comment by goldenmeans January 10, 2011 @ 8:54 pmI have that dress and I love it! It’s actually Plenty by Tracy Reese; it’s a great line, and Anthropologie often carries a few pieces.
Comment by adelle387 January 10, 2011 @ 8:47 pmYup, I love Tracy Reese and all of her diffusion lines! :) And how cool that you have this dress too! Isn’t it fabulous? I’d love to see how you wear it sometime!
