I fell in love with this amazing Nanette Lepore coat the moment I sighted it on Ms. Blair Waldorf last year. Unfortunately, Gossip Girl has the most annoying habit of getting its hands on designer samples that never go into production, and try as I might, I could never find a store that sold this glorious “Emperor’s New Coat” in the Marine colorway that Leighton Meester wears here. Plum, yes, gunmetal, yes, fabulous ocean-y teal blue color? No. Hrmph.

Which is why my eye was immediately caught this winter while walking through Macy*s by this Green With Envy Double Breasted Coat:

Exactly the same? No, not by any means. But the the general color family and the military-esque details and belting definitely still put it in the heavily inspired by category. The $240 price tag seemed like a bargain compared to the $525 price of the Nanette coat. (Well, the hypothetical price, ’cause if it was actually available I would have totally paid whatever because I am weak-willed.) Plus the fact that it was made from recycled wool seemed environmentally-friendly and pretty cool. Still, I hesitate at buying anything at full-price that seems readily available, much less something from Macy*s, so I waited. I saw it drop to $180 in November, then $120 in December, then $100 in January before I left on my trip, and then $80 when I came back in February. Finally, because I still couldn’t stop thinking about it and I wasn’t sure how long this game of price-drop-chicken could possibly last, I walked in last week to buy it and was extremely pleased to find it still on the rack for a mere $60. 75% off, yay! Yeah, it’s almost the end of coat-wearing season, but practicality still isn’t going to bring me down from my bargain-high :)

I got my Two-Paths trench the same day, so basically I’ve been in coat-heaven this week. And now I’m officially banned from buying any outerwear until next year :) Anyhow, hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend!

Comment by Michelle March 8, 2010 @ 1:37 pmGorgeous coat. BTW, Ann Taylor Loft had a very good copy of the Nanette Lepore coat late last fall, which I was lucky enough to pick up. It was called the Cotton Long Belted Coat and was available only in a color called “Lake”. It was well beyond typical ATL quality. Oddly, it is listed on the ATL site for $4.88 final sale (reduced from $168).
Comment by Denise March 9, 2010 @ 9:28 amOh my Denise, that copy is *fantastic*, I’m so sad I never saw it before! LOL, if only I could score it at $5 too. I bet it’s long sold out in physical stores though. Anyhow, thank you for the tip ;)
Comment by goldenmeans March 9, 2010 @ 9:39 amI am behind on blog reading and TV watching, but AHH a GG reference. Please post more about your Blair Waldorf obsessions. I will drool over her pieces but then recoil at price tags.
