Got The Blues

Sigh, I am a sniffly, sneezy mess this weekend. It was supposed to be a time to catch up on work, email and errands, but instead I’m mostly sitting and bed in my pajamas and feeling sorry for myself.  No sort of catching up involved, unless you count watching all the TV I missed earlier this week.  And definitely no remotely cute outfit today!  I do have some pictures I managed to take earlier this week though.  I was walking through the mall the other weekend, when my eyes latched on to this darling little number in the window at American Eagle:

.

I love buffalo plaid, I love a nice bright blue, I love tulle, and this dress was the perfect combination of all three.  Unfortunately, I do not generally love strapless things, and I wasn’t sure what kind of godforsaken juniors sizing American Eagle probably used, but I couldn’t help but walk in just to try it on.  And, miraculously, the dress fit me!  And even looked kind of cute.  But full of admirable, sensible resolutions about budgeting, I resisted actually buying and put it back on the rack.  But of course…I couldn’t help but check in on it online when I got home, just, you know, to see how it was doing.  And readers, though it was full priced in store, online, it was on sale!  AND THEN, I saw that American Eagle was having a Friends & Family promotion.  In the face of sale price + 20% off, my willpower immediately crumbled, and the dress was bought.  And…perhaps bought in its sister colorway, red, as well.  And maybe I got this cute little brocade thing too.  Oh my gosh, I just defied my budget in the name of 3 strapless dresses, things that were formerly my mortal enemies.  I have nothing to say in my defense.

Anyway, the blue one went out for it’s inaugural journey earlier this week, and even made an exciting day-to-night transition:

.

(above: worn with J.Crew Lady Day coat in Cobalt and Miu Miu Bow Satchel in Zaffiro)

.

The first is the night-time look; I wore this to see a Röyksopp concert Thursday night.  Nothing fancy, just a simple cardigan, because enclosed concerts get so overheated, and it was so nice to just shrug it off down to just the dress midway through and not burn up as I usually do.  I had a little fun with the footwear though; I tried to prevent the look from being too dark or dour by pairing it with these punchy cobalt blue Kate Spade Karolinas. In my opinion, the Karolinas approach the perfect shoe: a simple, classic sillhouette, a high-but-walkable heel, an acceptable comfort level, and a range of exciting colorways.  Kate Spade knows what she’s doing when it comes to shoes.

.

.

I stayed over at a friend’s afterwards, but then discovered Friday morning I actually forgot to pack my clothes to wear that day in my overnight bag.  Oops.  So I scrounged around for things in my car and purse to transition the dress to an acceptable day-time look.  A slouchy boyfriend cardigan, a belt, and a pair of ballet flats later, this is what I came up with:

.

American Eagle Buffalo Check Sweetheart Dress, Joie Chastity Cashmere Cardigan, Anthropologie Snakebite Belt, Chanel Ballet Flats

.

Ideally, I might have worn a pair of ribbed black tights and some cognac knee-high boots, but you gotta work with what you’ve got.  It turned out acceptable/warm enough for the office during the day and a movie in the evening (Twilight, naturally ;) ) anyway, so I was still pleased in the end.  Looking at these pictures, I seriously question my propensity for those Chanel ballet flats that kind of make my feet look like they are wearing scuba diver fins or something, but they are so incredibly comfy I don’t care.  It took me forever to find a them in a size 42  – the only acceptable size for my bigfoot size 11 feet in Chanel —  and I suppose my love is sealed/clouded by the effort and time I spent tracking them down ;)

Hope all of you are having wonderful weekends!

That’s funny about the packing! (I hate packing–it’s stressful and I’m not good at planning ahead) That dress looks great on you and I continue to be amazed at (and impressed by) your colorful shoe collection. The tights and knee high boots are a great idea with the outfit too—perhaps a future OOTD? :) Hope you are having a great weekend too!

Thanks! LOL, yes, I am a bit of a shoe addict, and I love bright jewel toned shoes with a classic sillhouette like these. Kate Spade only makes this style in boring colorways like black and nude now, otherwise I would have them in like 10 colors :)

And yes, I will definitely have to break out tights and boots for a future OOTD! This dress is going to be worn a lot this winter!

Oooh I love the blue coat over the blue dress! That color really pops on you.

And I too am guilty of pulling pieces out of my car to make new outfits.

Comment by Jinah

Haha, glad to know I’m not alone. I do it alll the time. And thank you for the compliment ;)

What IS IT going around San Francisco right now? I have been sniffly and fatigued all weekend. BF too as well as 3 friends and 4 co-workers. Besides that, you look fantastic! And your new bag? Gorgeous!!

Comment by Suzi

Aw, thanks for the compliments! Yes, I think the sudden change of weather is hitting us all hard! At least I don’t have the flu like some I know, just an annoying cold. I’m feeling a little better today…hope you feel better soon yourself!

Awww, sorry to hear you feel mucky- I’m feeling mucky too, so there’s definitely something going around in this world of ours. And let me just say- that dress looks amazing on you! I love it, and the way you have it matched and paired I would NEVER guess it’s from AE, you know? Awesome.

And glad to hear you got suckered into the gold dress, too. ;)

Feel better!

Comment by Chloe

Ha, you are *directly* responsible for suckering me in, and now come to think of it, I think I probably learned about the AE code from you too. This is allll your fault! ;)

Hope you are feeling better today…you certainly look fantastic in your OOTD, but I may just have been blinded by your perfect blouse.

Comment by goldenmeans

You look fantastic. As for blue buffalo plaid, it reminds me of a shirt I wore all the time in 1983!

Comment by WendyB

LOL, yes, buffalo plaid is pretty retro! I should go thrifting for some nice plaid shirts soon (since they are in style right now, but so marked up!).

Sorry to hear that you’re feeling under the weather! I hope those germs get out of your body soon! They’ve been freeloading for long enough, haha! The dress is super cute on you, and with the deal you got, it’s like you were MEANT to have it. Also, the shoes! I am so jealous! They are BEAUTIFUL! The color is just perfection.

Comment by Amy Kelinda

:) Thanks Amy! You’re so sweet. Yeah, now that I think about it, 40% off pretty much is fate, so I will stop feeling guilty!

Comment by goldenmeans

Oh no! I hope you feel better soon!

Adorable dress! Great job on transitioning it to day. All I have in my backseat is a vintage fur coat I’m airing out (b/c I’m too lazy to take it to the cleaner yet). I don’t think I’d quite achieve the same adorable day look with that thing.

Haha, I’m no master organizer. I just stay over at the BF’s a lot since it’s right next to work and so I have lots of random things from erstwhile outfits that have fallen out of my overnight bag or that I just threw on the seat in my car. Also, sometimes heels are ouchy, so I always have a pair of ballet flats hanging around in there just in case :) And I needed them that day, since I kinda rolled my ankle a bit the night before and was in no mood for heels!

Comment by goldenmeans

Goodness! You were sick and had a twisted ankle?! You’ve been in bad shape!

Comment by Jessica

Hi Anjali!
The blue AE dress looks awesome!
You did a good job with making an outfit for the day.Only clothes I have in my car are 2 giant puffer coats and some gloves in case my car breaks down middle of nowhere. It hardly snows here but i’m pretty paranoid abt it ..lol
Hope u feel better soon

Comment by missmasala

Thank you so much Miss M! Coats are really the only extra thing I *mean* to carry in my car too (though I am a sissy who only has to deal with California weather), the rest of the stuff is just in there because it dropped out of my bag or I lazily slung it in there but forgot to actually bring it inside! :)

Comment by goldenmeans

What a fabulous outfit. I just love tone-on-tone blues. I am envious of every single piece in that first picture. Actually, I am envious of your fantastic wardrobe in general! LOL

I can’t wait to see how you wear the AE brocade dress. I’ve been ogling that dress but don’t think I can do strapless.

Comment by overcaffeinated

Why thank you! :)

I haven’t been brave enough to wear the strapless brocade dress yet — it is cute enough, but not super flattering towards my pudgy belly. However, once I get motivated to style it properly with a cardi over it and maybe some Spanx or something I think it will look quite nice! I’ll try to bust it out at the first holiday party I go to and take some pictures.

Comment by goldenmeans

that blue coat is STUNNING on you! love the matching blue shoes too!

Comment by anniecat

Thanks so much! I am such a sucker for rich blues and greens; it’s a testament to how bad my willpower is when it comes to items in those colors that I can ever compose an outfit like this ;)

Comment by goldenmeans

Hey, pretty lady! I just wanted to wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Comment by Jessica

How sweet Jessica, thank you so much! Hope you had a wonderful holiday as well.

Comment by goldenmeans

That is SUCH a rad dress! Tres cute ;) Also, loving the bag in a big way!

Btdubs, are you Indian?

Comment by Arushi from FabBlab

Thank you Arushi! And yes, I am Indian!

Comment by goldenmeans

hi! i am considering ordering the Lady Day coat from Jcrew….i live not far from you in Santa Rosa….do you think it’s worth having? i’m just hoping it’s not too heavy for our mild Norcal winters….though it snowed at my home this morning and it will be 26 degrees overnight tonight….brrr!
