I’ve had a serious thing for skirts for the last year or two, and I always love J. Crew and Anthropologie’s offerings in particular. Here are some reviews of recent J. Crew skirts (that I’m sure about 500 other people have covered by now, I’m so slow at posting, sorry!):
First up is the Pleated Lawn Skirt – $70.
I’m all about pleats, so I loved the look of this skirt at first on the hanger, but once on, it was a little less attractive. I had just bought my Banana Republic pleated accordion skirt not 20 minutes before trying this on, and I found it maybe suffered a little too much in comparison. Whereas the other is crisp and chic, this is a little overwhelming and matronly, a little too Laura Ingles Wilder for my taste. I think a lot of it has to do with the too-long length of this skirt. I’m 5′9″ and usually deal okay with long skirt lengths, but I felt this was a little much for me even. I also wasn’t in love with the drab drab colors this seemed to be offered in — besides white, there was “mushroom,” light pink and pewter. I don’t know, I just didn’t find any of them particularly inspiring. I’m much more attracted to the Sundance Catalog’s take on this look, the French Quarter Skirt ($98), which has a slightly more flattering cut and comes in a pleasing green hue:
.
After that, I tried on the Tiered Ruffle Skirt ($148), which I liked a lot better:
I have been on the search for the perfect white tiered ruffle skirt for a long time (ironically spurred by J. Crew’s last white tiered ruffle skirt offering, the Tulle Cascade Skirt) and I eventually concluded (in this post) that the skirt to fulfill my yearnings was a pretty, but very expensive, Valentino Red number. Shortly after writing that though, I recieved my J. Crew card member’s preview look book and saw this skirt in it and knew that actually, *this* was the perfect skirt I was looking for. I finally tried it on last week and was not disappointed, it’s lovely. The length is good (most tiered ruffle skirts tend to be a little hoochie) and the layers of chiffon fall and drape perfectly. The only thing is that it runs *very* big. I tried on a 4 (I normally somewhere in the 4 – 6 – 8 spectrum depending on the cut, the line, and the extent of vanity sizing) and it gaped pretty badly at the waist. I ended up fitting best in a 2. Let me tell you people, with my butt, I am no size 2. But I’ll take it, I guess.
.
Finally, there’s the Bow Front Pencil Skirt ($98). No idea what this one really called actually, since it’s not on the website yet.
Oh god, I want to marry this skirt and have it’s babies. It’s so awesome. The robin’s egg/Tiffany blue color is gorgeous, and the bow detailing on the front is so sweet and adorable. Mrwor. I am categorically opposed to buying anything from J.Crew not on sale, but my willpower is wavering here and I think I might have to make an exception. (Fits a little big for J. Crew’s pencil skirts — I normally take an 8 there to accommodate the backside and a 6 here was fairly comfy/roomy for me.)
Have you guys tried on any of these, or seen any other cute skirts, from J. Crew or elsewhere? Let me know your thoughts on them!

I love the pencil skirt on you- I agree, I think you might need to get it, sale or no sale. I love that color, too. It is awesomeness.
I’ve been looking for a decent ruffly skirt that looks darling and not freakish on me. I really like the white one on you, but I’m not loving how large it runs. I tried this one on from Anthroplogie:
http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/productdetail.jsp?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&_dynSessConf=7296678871584229661&id=923093&parentid=NEW_APP_PANT&pushId=NEW_APP_PANT&prepushId=NEW_APP_PANT&popId=NEW_FOR_SEASON&sortProperties=%2BmarketingPriority%2C-saleDate&navCount=3&navAction=jump&fromCategoryPage=true&selectedProductSize=&selectedProductSize1=&color=gre&colorName=GREY
And really liked it, especially pulled up to my waist (not lower and at the hips) but I am having such a hard time with the color! I want it to go with more things than just white, you know? But the cotton was lovely and soft, and I keep thinking about it, so I might have to pull the trigger.
*le sigh*
Comment by Chloe March 30, 2009 @ 12:33 pmthe blue skirt looks fantastic on you. Just like that, too!
Comment by fidele March 30, 2009 @ 12:43 pmFirst off I love your blog!! That tiffany colored skirt it too cute!! Did you get a chance to see the Silk Pleated skirt (#11653) in real life? I loved it in the lookbook, but wonder if it fits similar to the BR one?

Comment by Sonu March 31, 2009 @ 5:49 amMy Jcrew in Chicago was offering all pencil skirts on sale (I can’t remember the price… I think $78.00?) + I got a 25% off card in the mail yesterday to use on any purchase until April + you get 15% off for being a teacher or student. That would bring the price down to around $50.00.
Comment by Lindsay March 31, 2009 @ 8:09 amChloe — that skirt is SO cute! i have seen skirts like it come and go at anthro in slightly different colors (black, and the last one i remember was a white one called the ‘echolocation skirt’), but i almost like that lilac better than the others, it’s so striking! true, your color choices are a bit limited (though i would add black and deep purple to white as potential contrast colors), but: so pretty!
fidele — thank you!! i think you all have convinced me to go back and buy it this week :)
sonu — thank you :) i haven’t actually seen the silk pleated skirt, though i was very intrigued by the pictures online. it’s a collection piece, and my store rarely gets those in, so i doubt i’ll get to see it in person. i agree that the material and the pleats are gorgeous looking, but something tells me though that the way the waist is tailored, it might not be the most flattering on me though. i think the modelling shot actually looks pretty unflattering on the model even :/
lindsay — thank you for letting me know that! i haven’t gotten a 25% off card in the mail yet, but i may just go anyway soon if they are having a pencil skirt promotion in store! unfortunately my store doesn’t let you stack your student discount with other % off promotions, so the price wouldn’t go that low, but it’s still semi-reasonable.
Comment by goldenmeans March 31, 2009 @ 10:25 amHey!
I really appreciated your review on the tiffany blue pencil from j.crew. I thought it was so beautiful and unique that I went out tonight and bought it. Store associates weren’t sure if it was retail only (hasn’t shown on the internet yet) and they only had one in my size (downsized just like you advised!) Because I didn’t like the orange color and because they only had one in my size, I decided to go for it. Still thinking what to wear with it. Definitely it could be dressed up or down.
take care!
Thanks so much!
Comment by kathryn April 1, 2009 @ 8:18 pmI definitely like the shorter ruffle skirt better, but the bow skirt is to DIE FOR. So cute!
Comment by GingerSnap April 2, 2009 @ 12:18 pmHi Kathryn — I’m so glad my review helped you! And tickled that you went and bought it, I’m about to go do that myself this afternoon :) As for what to wear it with, I was thinking of white oxfords for work, pale, watery colored lacy or embellished blouses (like the Annie cami I was trying it on with) for going out, and a contrasting plain black v-neck for casual occasions . I also think this could be fun in fall if you punched it up with like a royal purple shirt, a black cardigan and tights. Just some initial musings. Hrm…now I really want to run out and buy it!
GingerSnap — Thanks! And your blog is super-cute :)
Comment by goldenmeans April 3, 2009 @ 12:35 pmI randomly came across your blog through kimberlys but I noticed you visit Jcrew quite often have u tried on or seen the purple metallic cotton linen pencil skirt? It looks amazing in the catalogue but I wonder if it looks as good on person over size 0. Love your blog! I bought that turquoise top from anthro online today that you showed! Thanks!
Comment by Karissa April 5, 2009 @ 9:06 pmKarissa — I haven’t yet seen that skirt in stores, but it looks lovely online, I agree! In general, I find that J. Crew’s pencil skirts can be pretty flattering if the material is thick/weighty enough, which this looks like it might be. When it’s super thin they show off every lump and bump, but this I think might be safe :) I’m glad that you got that Anthro top, isn’t it fab? :) Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
Comment by goldenmeans April 6, 2009 @ 9:10 amYour review helped me pick the right size for my J Crew ruffle skirt! Thanks so much! Here’s my outfit if you want to see: http://dcelestine.blogspot.com/2009/09/channeling-carrie-bradshaw-j-crew.html
